Specular microscopy

Scanning endothelial microscope (SEM)

Scanning endothelial microscopy (SEM) is a non-contact method for corneal evaluation, using the confocal laser microscope focused on endothelium.

We use Nidek SEM for a high precision non-contact scanning, for both the quality analysis of the endothelium wall and the automatic cell analysis (number of cells and morphology).

The analysis is important:

  • to find out endothelia dystrophic diseases
(e.g.: Fuchs dystrophy) with potential corneal opacity
  • for the screening of patients who are to be operated for cataract
(if the endothelium is damaged, the improper surgery technique may lead to the cornea permanent opacity)
